SUMMARY:Nora's Salon South: "Françoise"
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your patience\, everyone\, as we worked to reschedule our salon reading of Françoise. We have a new date and hope to see all of our Alabama folks there! \n*** \nOur next gathering of Nora’s Salon South in Montgomery\, Alabama is Monday\, June 26th! We hope you’ll join us for a glass of wine\, friendly conversation\, and an informal reading of Françoise by friend of Nora’s\, Suzanne Trauth (Rehearsing Desire\, La Fonda). \n***\nFrançoise Bollinger is eighty and ill. Confronted with her mortality\, she is frightened to die with a terrible sin on her conscience. While grappling with her past to find forgiveness for her actions\, she relives the summer of 1944 in Nice\, France. Françoise remembers studying dance with one of Isadora Duncan’s protégées; falling in love with Christian\, a young German soldier\, sharing his passion for the poetry of Rilke and sharing her passion for dance. Now sixty years later\, as she faces the end of her life\, Françoise conjures up Christian\, Isadora Duncan\, and a younger version of herself\, struggling to navigate between the two worlds of past and present. A compassionate doctor and troubled granddaughter are her only companions as she searches for the redemption she needs before dying. \n**** \nNora’s Salon South: Françoise\nMonday\, June 26th at 7pm\n in Cloverdale\, Montgomery\, AL\nhosted by Caroline Reddick Lawson\n \nSPACE IS LIMITED. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.\nPlease email us at reservations@norasplayhouse.org with the subject “RSVP for 6/26 Salon South” to add your name to the guest list. You will receive the exact street address when your reservation is confirmed. \nSuggested donation: $10

SUMMARY:Barlow Reading: Leah Barsanti's "The Almost Emperor of the Unofficial Deestrick of Lake Michigan"
DESCRIPTION:Nora’s Playhouse and our fellow women-in-theatre-focused nonprofit History Matters/Back to the Future are proud to present a staged reading of Leah Barsanti’s Judith Barlow Award-winning play: \nThe Almost Emperor of the Unofficial Deestrick of Lake Michigan\nIt is the 1920s in Chicago\, and The District of Lake Michigan is thriving. Led by Cap and Ma Streeter\, the lakefront plot of land that houses the District is occupied by a ragtag group of Chicagoans living outside the law. They have been allowed to live there\, pretty much undisturbed\, for decades\, but now they are in the way of millionaire Potter Palmer’s master plan to expand his holdings onto Lake Shore Drive. Not one to do his own dirty work\, Palmer sends puppets (Sargeant O’Malley and N.A. Warpbank) to remove Streeter and his followers from the land once and for all. \n*** \nLeah Barsanti\, winner of the 2020 Judith Barlow Prize\nThe Judith Barlow Prize is awarded by History Matters/Back to the The Future annually to a student playwright for an  exceptional one-act play inspired by the work of an historic female playwright. The student winner of the prize receives a $2\,500 award and a reading of their work in New York City\, with a $500 award to the participating professor of the course in which the inspiring play was taught. Leah Barsanti of Northwestern University was inspired by Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and sponsored by Professor Roxane Heinze-Bradshaw. \nThis is Nora’s Playhouse’s first year collaborating with History Matters/Back to the The Future to produce a reading of the Barlow Award winning piece. \nThe reading will be held at 7:00pm on Monday\, April 20\, 2020 at the Episcopal Actors’ Guild (1 East 29th Street\, NYC 10016). The reading will be followed by a talkback and a brief wine and cheese reception.

SUMMARY:Nora's Salon South: "Redtop Road Requiem" + "In the Midst of the Storm"
DESCRIPTION:The next gathering of our Alabama reading series\, Nora’s Salon South\, is Monday\, June 24th. And it is a Double Feature! We hope our Alabama folks will join us for a glass of wine\, friendly conversation\, and informal readings of two short plays developed through this year’s The Nora Project: Susan Samuel’s Redtop Road Requiem and Lil Martin’s In the Midst of the Storm. \n***\nSet in the early 1960’s in a small Florida town\, Susan Samuel’s Redtop Road Requiem follows two children struggling to come to terms with their larger-than-life father’s alcoholism. SUMMARY:Nora's Salon South: "Exposure"
DESCRIPTION:The next gathering of our Alabama reading series\, Nora’s Salon South\, is Tuesday\, April 30th.\nWe hope you’ll join us for a glass of wine\, friendly conversation\, and an informal reading of Pauline David-Sax‘s play: Exposure. \nIn the early 1920s\, loyalties are tested and secrets exposed as two women struggle to define themselves. Georgia gained notoriety as the subject of husband Alfred’s photographs and now fights to be taken seriously as a painter in her own right. Beck endures a lackluster job while waiting for her husband\, aspiring photographer Paul\, to achieve the financial success necessary to support a family. When Alfred and Georgia invite Beck and Paul to their lake house for a visit\, Paul sees the trip as a chance to convince Alfred\, now a successful gallery owner\, to showcase his latest work\, but Alfred is preoccupied with his own artistic pursuits. Beck attempts to advocate for Paul with both Alfred and Georgia\, not realizing that her interference has the potential to undermine both Georgia’s career and her own marriage. \nLoosely based on the lives of real life artists Georgia O’Keeffe\, Alfred Stieglitz\, Paul Strand\, and Rebecca Strand\, Exposure explores the complexities of gender\, creativity\, success\, and loyalty. \nPlaywright Pauline David-Sax will be on hand for the reading and the talkback that follows. Nora’s Playhouse featured David-Sax’s Exposure at The Nora Salon in NYC in November 2017. \n\n\n**** \nSPACE IS LIMITED. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.\nPlease email us at reservations@norasplayhouse.org to add your name to the guest list. You will receive the exact street address when your reservation is confirmed.

SUMMARY:The Nora Salon: "Waiting"
DESCRIPTION:Our next gathering of The Nora Salon is Friday\, March 29th in NoMad\, Manhattan! We hope you’ll join us for a glass of wine\, friendly conversation\, and an informal reading of Donna Kaz’s full-length play with music: Waiting. \n\n***\n\nA parody of Broadway and the New York City restaurant business\, Waiting begins as Lucy\, a young actress from a small Midwestern town\, steps off the bus in Times Square ready to pursue her dream of being an actress. She immediately lands her first job on Broadway–waiting on tables in a restaurant. All of the waiters at The Great White Café are actors\, too\, each one desperate to land a job in the theatre\, yet unconsciously addicted to the performative aspects of waiting on tables. Who needs a part in a play when you have a job at which you “perform” with energy and speed combined with sincerity and pathos? To make matters worse\, the Café’s manager\, Howard\, is a sexist bully who despises artists and does everything he can to make sure his team never escape into a world where actors earn respect. Waiting is set during a not-so-long-ago-era when women had to buck up to being harassed or lose their jobs and asks the question: Can actors who are New York City waiters ever play any other part? \n\n***\n\n\nSpace is extremely limited. Reservations are required.\nPlease email us at reservations@norasplayhouse.org to add your name to the guest list. \n\n\nYou’ll receive the exact address and directions in a separate email when your reservation is confirmed. \nSuggested donation: $10

SUMMARY:Nora's Salon South: "Rehearsing Desire"
DESCRIPTION:Our next gathering of Nora’s Salon South in Montgomery\, Alabama is Monday\, February 25th! \nWe hope you’ll join us for a glass of wine\, friendly conversation\, and an informal reading of Rehearsing Desire by friend of Nora’s\, Suzanne Trauth (Francoise\, La Fonda).\n\n***\nAn American in . . . Kiev? It’s the summer of 1991\, and Charlotte Cranford is the first American–and first woman–director at the Kiev Theatre Company. She’s been sent by her university on a cultural exchange to oversee a production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. The play’s passions boil over into a real-life love triangle as the streets outside the theatre erupt in violence\, leading to Ukrainian Independence. Love\, loyalty\, commitment\, courage\, art and Soviet intrigue challenge the old cliche that the show must go on.\n\n***\nSpace is extremely limited. Reservations are required.\nPlease email us at reservations@norasplayhouse.org to add your name to the guest list. You’ll receive the exact address in a separate email when your reservation is confirmed.
